To fully appreciate the role of the auditory nerve located inside the inner ear, it is important to spend some time discovering how we hear sounds. When we hear a sound, what we really experience is the vibrations of the sound. The pinna, the only visible part of the ear, has a unique spiral shape. It is the first part of the outer ear's anatomy that reacts to sound. The pinna's function is to act as a funnel and direct sound deeper into the ear. As the sound vibrations enter through the pinna, the opening connecting to the ear canal amplifies them, making the sound easier to hear.
