As with most other electrical devices, it is important to keep your hearing aid dry. If however, you find that it has come into contact with water there are a few things you can do to hopefully avoid any damage being caused.
- Turn the hearing aid off right away
- Take the battery out and dry it very well
- With the battery door open, give the hearing aid a shake to get any water out of it
- Still with the battery door open, place the hearing aid on a pile of newspapers and put it on a moderately warm surface like a bar heater set on low.
Dehumidifiers are also handy for drying out hearing aids. The battery is removed and the battery door left open, it is then placed in the dehumidifier for about 24 hours. This also helps removed any bacteria and odours.
If you find that you get your hearing aid dirty or salty water gets on it. It can be rinsed immediately with clean water then follow the above procedure. If in doubt it is important to contact your clinician so that they can give you further advice about what to do.
