Hearing tests offer a lot of benefits. As well as identifying hearing problems before they become major issues, they can also help identify any underlying conditions. While people know that they need regular hearing tests, the question is “How often should you have a hearing test”. The answer changes depending on your age.

Noise induced hearing loss is a slow loss or deterioration of hearing caused by prolonged exposure to loud noise, or in some cases short exposure to extremely loud noise. In Australia one in six people are affected by hearing loss. Many of these are caused by prolonged exposure to loud noise. Because of the major impact it can have on quality of life, preventing noise induced hearing loss is high on the agenda of audiologists.

There are many know causes of hearing loss. The most common reasons are things such as exposure to extremely loud noise, age, congenital defects, toxicity of some drugs and some ear infections. Many diagnostic methods are available to help detect hearing loss causes and treatment, but the best option is to have a hearing test with an audiologist.

To most people, hearing loss happens gradually over time. In fact, many of us hardly notice the early stages and can carry on for years slowly losing our hearing. But this gradual hearing loss can lead you to make mistakes - by not hearing instructions properly or causing embarrassment to yourself or someone else by mishearing a conversation. The potential symptoms of hearing loss are wide and varied. But they all need to be checked by a hearing specialist as soon as possible.
