Probably the biggest driver of the stigma around hearing aids is that hearing loss (“bad enough to require aids”) is an old age condition. Hearing aids are perceived (by both nonusers and some unhappy users) to belong in the same category as false teeth and decreased mental facilities.

There is a perception that hearing aids are for people who can’t hear (anything) and situational hearing loss, which seems to be most common, certainly in the early stages, is not seen to warrant the need for hearing aids.

There are several underlying perceptions/beliefs that appear to drive a lot of the associations, fears, stigma and resulting decisions in relation to hearing loss and hearing aids.

Often people know their hearing has deteriorated but they don’t want to wear a hearing aid because they think it will be the bulky, obvious and uncomfortable ‘beige banana’ of the past. The Clinicians at Connect Hearing often spend as much time working on the attitudes of people with hearing loss as they do fitting and fine-tuning hearings aids.
